PROJECT NO. 2020/39/B/NZ5/00745

"Polymersomes specifically releasing cGAMP and doxorubicin in tumor hypoxic regions as a new anti-cancer therapeutic strategy"

Head of project: dr hab. Katarzyna Jelonek

Project realization period:30.09.2021-29.09.2024

The aim of the project is to develop a polymer nanocarrier containing two anticancer drugs: the STING protein agonist - cGAMP, which activates the immune system to effectively eliminate cancer cells, and doxorubicin. Both drugs will be specifically released in regions of low oxygen concentration (areas of hypoxia) in the tumor. In the frame of the project, it is planned to develop and characterize the properties of polymeric carriers (polymersomes) that disintegrate and specifically release drugs in the hypoxic regions of the tumor. The specific release of drugs in a low oxygen concentration environment will be analyzed in vitro against neoplastic and normal cell lines an in vivo in a mouse skin cancer model - melanoma and mouse breast cancer. The effectiveness of inhibiting the growth of tumors with the use of the studied polymersomes will also be assessed.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
