International Conference POLYMAT2022

On 17/03/2022, the Centre for Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences organized the conference The Silesian Meetings on Polymer Materials POLYMAT2022. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Prof. Andrzej Dworak, an outstanding scientist in the field of polymers, a long-term director of the CMPW PAN.

We had the honor of hosting an outstanding lecturers: prof. Brigitte Voit (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research, Dresden, Germany), prof. Rainer Haag (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany), prof. Stergios Pispas (National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, Greece), prof. Axel Müller (Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany) and prof. Petar Petrov (Institute of Polymers, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria). These scientists presented works thematically related to the scientific interests of prof. Dworak, which included nanomaterials with special properties, as well as their potential application.

Over 170 scientists from leading research centers in Poland and abroad participated in the Polymat2022 conference. In the poster session, over 130 works were presented on a very diverse polymer topic, ranging from syntheses and characteristics of polymers, through polymer nano- and microsystems, to polymer scaffolds, hydrogels, composites and blends. Three prizes were awarded for the best posters in the following categories: advanced synthesis techniques and research on polymer materials (Aneta Medaj, Jagiellonian University in Krakow), advanced polymer biomaterials (Mattia Parati, University of Wolverhampton, UK) and in the category of interdisciplinary works, conducted in international cooperation (Erik Dimitrov, Institute of Polymers, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Sofia University and CMPW PAN, Zabrze). The prizes in the amount of 450 Euro were sponsored by the Polymers journal.

The conference was held under the auspices of the European Federation of Polymers, the Committee of Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Chemical Society. The media patronage over the conference was taken by the Polymers magazine and the Chemical Industry.

The conference was an important scientific event and created an opportunity for direct discussion and exchange of views after the two-year Covid-19 pandemic. It was an excellent opportunity to integrate the scientific community of universities and institutes, students, experts and engineers working in the field of precisely constructed polymers for new applications.

Details of the conference are available on the website at: http://polymat2022.cmpw-pan.pl.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
