"Bioresorbable, electrospun nonwoven as a multi-drug delivery system for a combination glioblastoma therapy"

Head of project: Dr Monika Musiał-Kulik

Realization period: 15.07.2022 - 14.07.2025

This project aims to develop the multi-drug delivery system in a form of a nonwoven wafer for controlled release of anticancer drug, autophagy inhibitor and radiosensitizer, as a proposal of the future, combined with radiation, treatment of glioblastoma.

Designed DDS will be composed of bioresorbable polymers and obtained with the use of electrospinning and electrospraying. Three drugs with different mechanisms of action were selected for the study to enhance the anticancer effect. The prolonged but delayed release of the drugs will be optimized to correlate the start of chemotherapy with radiation by application of core-shell fibres and mixed fibres (like cable wire) but also the appropriate order of the nonwoven layers.

Results will help to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of drugs release from bioresorbable nonwovens, that are in turn associated with the degradation mechanism of a polymer vehicle, but also permit the prediction and the adjustment of delivered doses of the drugs, enabling the adaptation of the polymers to the requirements of specific biomedical purposes. The effectiveness of the proposed nonwoven will be verified in vitro and in vivo on an animal model.
