Science Day 14th September 2012

On September 14, 2012 the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of PAN participated in the 7th edition of the “Science Day” in the Poległych Bohaterów Park in Zabrze.

This year the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of PAN has once again been awarded 1st prize for the most interesting stand among 33 exhibitors during the 7th edition of the “Science Day”.

The event took place on September 14 in the Poległych Bohaterów Park in Zabrze at ul. Dubiela in Zabrze, where a tent campus was erected, together with a stage offering numerous tourist attractions. Using the slogan “Towards knowledge through fun”, the employees of the Center demonstrated surprising, original and very effective experiments as well as chemical and physics tricks. They revealed the beauty and colorfulness of chemistry and physics, showing a new face of these two areas of science, which, truth be told, are not among the most liked fields. It is surprising to see how creative ideas and the growing capabilities of chemistry lead to unbelievable and wonderful chemical “marvels”. The exhibitors demonstrated interfacial polymerization, the operating mechanism of intelligent polymers, the creation of lively colors from milk and the behavior of a non-Newtonian fluid. Foam pictures, a foam bomb, golden rain of crystals and a magic finger were “created”. Fun with gravitation was shown as well as a self-inflating balloon.

The organizers of the 7th edition of the “Science Day” included: the City Hall in Zabrze, the Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery and the Center for Practical Training in Zabrze. The purpose of the event was to propagate as widely as possible the activity of scientific and research, educational and training institutions as well as companies, clubs and associations not only from Zabrze, but also from the entire region. The Science Day promoted the most important scientific and technical achievements among city residents, especially school-aged youth; moreover, it presented the science we come across every day in an accessible and interesting way.
