“Playing with Chemistry”

On 5 August 2013 the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences organized classes for children and youth in “Klub Kwadrat” (literally “the Square Club”) of the Zabrze Housing Cooperative, within the framework of the “Holidays with the Square” campaign.

The scientific employees of the Center prepared a lecture and demonstrations entitled “Playing with Chemistry”. During the meeting the children had the opportunity to become familiar with basic chemical concepts, and do simple chemical experiments under the watchful eye of Róża Trzcińska (M.Sc. Eng) and Daria Lipowska (M.Sc. Eng). The experiments allowed them, among others, to become detectives and read “hidden inscriptions”, to make milk whirlpools, see a volcano in a cup, and learn about the properties of an exquisite, thermosensitive polymer.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
