Scientific workshops

On 30 August 2013, in response to the invitation from the Youth Community Centre in Gliwice, the employees of the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences conducted scientific workshops for children from primary schools in Gliwice. The classes, which enjoyed large popularity, were organized within the program entitled “Holiday Talent Factory” at the time free from school classes.

the information on the workshops (link) appeared in the program of Imperium TV station in Gliwice – it starts at 3 minutes and 29 seconds.

During the workshops Mariola Siwy (PhD, Eng) and Magdalena Wójtowicz (M.Sc. Eng.) presented original and striking chemical and physical experiments with the use of special reagents, as well some experiments that may even be performed at home. They also presented the manner of operation of intelligent, thermosensitive polymers produced in the Center, which have shape memory and which are applied in medicine. Apart from the opportunity to see the experiments, the participants also had the chance to do simple chemical and physical experiments on their own, such as colorful whirlpools in milk, escaping black pepper, invisible handwriting or non-Newtonian fluid.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
