2013 Science Day

On 13 September 2013 the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences won the first place in the competition for the most interesting stall during the 9th Science Day organized by the City of Zabrze, in cooperation with the Professor Zbigniew Religa Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development.

That event was held under the honorary patronage of the President of the City of Zabrze Małgorzata Mańka-Szulik.

The purpose of the event was the broadly-defined promotion of the activities of educational, scientific and research institutions as well as firms, clubs and associations not only from Zabrze, but from the whole region. The exhibitors presented their vast educational product range, expanded with interesting scientific demonstrations and experiments.

The Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been actively participating in that undertaking for several years. The employees of the Center chose the forms of presentation that allow to actively engage the participants in the performed experiments. They demonstrated interesting and effective chemical and physical experiments under the name of “Chemistry and Physics Games”. They revealed a different face of those not much-loved areas of knowledge. The following experiments were performed, among others: disappearing smoke, burning banknote, balloons made of CDs, ship in a bottle, ink trick, colorful whirlpool, invisible writing, levitating dog, games with dry ice, etc. We hope that the Science Day proved to be an inspiration for the young people to expand their knowledge and become more interested in science.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
