A group of scientists based in Korea, Germany and Poland (CMPW PAN) have developed a lithium ion battery in which highly crystalline graphene coats silicon cathode material. Using this material leads to batteries with energy densities two times more than commonly-used lithium ion batteries. The study has been published in the online journal Nature Communications published as "Silicon carbide-free graphene growth on silicon for lithium-ion battery with high volumetric energy density".

On 25 November 2013 the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been granted the EURO SYMBOL 2013 title in the category of Innovation. Eurosymbols 2013 were awarded during a ceremonial gala in the Theatre of Silesia in Katowice.

The Jury of the Eurosymbol Program appreciated the Center for its research in the MEMSTENT project, within which there has been developed the basis of the technology for obtaining new-generation biocompatible surgical systems with the unique property of shape memory induced within the temperature of human body. The project was co-financed by the European Union, within the Innovative Economy Program.

SYMBOL is a general-Polish promotional program managed by the editorial staff of Monitor Rynkowy (Market Monitor) in the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna newspaper. Its aim is to select and honor the institutions whose brands have become representative for the whole sector. The program helps to develop the image of such firms against the background of the whole Polish economy, based on the most representative aspects of their activities.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
